Increasing spatial resolution of wind resource prediction using NWP and RANS simulation

The detailed prediction of the upcoming wind on farms can support optimization energy production and operation maintenance. Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) tools allow to simulate over long-term forecasting horizons (up several days) with a spatial resolution ranging between continental level down few hundred meters. We present methodology, based upon Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) modelling, that allows downscale supplied by NWP model typical length-scale applications. proposed approach combines number standard tools, including: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Advanced Research - Forecasting (WRF-ARW) OpenFOAM, proposes methods interface these set-up local-scale simulation. Models problem sizes are selected keep computational cost system sustainable in view its implementation operational forecasting. Finally, we application method given onshore site, for three different meteorological conditions, showing potential approach, but also giving an account limitations it may encounter when dealing complex planetary boundary layers.
